After becoming a public company in 1971 and moving its
headquarters to Mayfield Village, Ohio, the company experienced
steady growth throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1987, Progressive
surpassed $1 billion in premiums and the company’s stock was
listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE:PGR).
The stage was set for a period of innovation in the 1990’s that
truly set it apart from the competition.
Progressive
didn’t become the country’s fourth largest insurance company by
doing business the way other companies did. The company set a new
standard for customer service in 1990 with the introduction of a
full range of personal auto insurance products and Immediate
Response® claims service that was available 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week. Help now was just a phone call away, any time of
the day or night. Progressive’s claims representatives traveling
in Immediate Response Vehicles (introduced in 1994) could even come
right to the scene of an accident.
